RoHS Directive | RoHS Testing

RoHS is the acronym for the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic products. RoHS Directive covers a wide range of products, including not only integrated electrical and electronic products but also individual parts, raw materials and packing cases.

The EU RoHS Directive came into force in 2006 and is the first RoHS Directive. The EU RoHS restricts the use of six hazardous substances, including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr(+6)) , Poly-brominated Bipheneyls (PPB) or Polybrominated Diohenyl Ethers (PBDE) in electrical and electronic products placed on the EU market.

EU RoHS is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods. It is also similar to the End of Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation, which prohibits the use of these 6 hazardous substances in vehicles sold after July 2003.

What is new?

A new European Union RoHS Directive (known as RoHS2) was adopted by the European Council on 27 May 2011. More info about RoHS2 can be found here.

Since 2006, many other countries have also formulated their own national RoHS regulations or directives in succession.
